About the Builds
I struggle to commit a singular contextual framework on which to base my work but because of this I can maintain that my practice reflects my builds in being open, changing and ambiguous as I continue research. They are driven by an intuitive process, and remain an expression and outcome of my interests and experiences today.
I continue to collect materials and objects, which I repeatedly re-use in different ways. I refer to these as builds. They indulge my love for the properties of materials, their weights, textures, colours and form as well as how they can come together with an acknowledgment of space, tension and playfulness.
Instead of there being a singular build, a series has developed as I introduce or remove materials and as they travel across different spaces. I view this as one long continuing piece of work, despite changing locations or materials. From this the archive has formed, which is a collection of photos documenting previous builds.
I enjoy exploring the emergence of artworks through the boundary between process and outcome. The photos encompass this in being part of the building process as well their documentation, and also becoming a photo series that I consider also to be independent works.
Taking the photos allows me to explore the builds again after making, and through framing them with a camera, a different way of seeing encourages me to look closely at materials, travel around the space and engage with the build from a different perspective.
Time is also significant as the photos capture a particular moment, holding it still so that previous forms of the Builds continue to exist through photos despite only existing temporarily. The photos are also the only documentation of the work. They document past builds and their material use, but in an incomplete trace due to the limitations in documenting through photographs. I consider the build to be something that exists autonomously through the materials and as a process. It is not a commodity that can be owned or held and I wouldn’t consider it as my own, despite being part of the process.
The Build existing independently supports that it is an outcome and expression of mine comes with no intention of communicating specific movements or ideas, is not strictly representational, and instead it exists authentically as itself. Viewers may form ranging perspectives on what the work is, and gain different insights from it, and from this it may also have a future with participation and group builds.
In the archive submenu is a list of builds and their galleries which will be updated as I make more. I would like to be more ambitious, growing the material collection further, and with larger objects. The builds themselves could also become larger, existing in more diverse and public spaces.
Book
I also have also made a book for the photographic archive that is available on request. Email me for more information at katietillyer2@gmail.com.
